Cellular Transport

Cell Membrane and Transport

TermDefinition
carrier protein transport protein that provides a tube-like opening in the plasma membrane through which particles can diffuse
energy is used during active transport but not passive transport
passive transport particle movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
facilitated diffusion a form of passive transport that uses transport proteins
active transport particle movement from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration
osmosis the diffusion of water through a cell membrane
active transport When energy is required to move materials through a cell membrane
passive transport the movement of substances through the cell membrane without the use of cellular energy
diffusion When molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration
equilibrium when the molecules of one substance are spread evenly throughout another substances to become balanced
solute something that dissolves in fluid
solvent the fluid (usually water) that a solute dissolves in
hypertonic solution a solution that has more solute (dissolved material) relative to another
hypotonic solution a solution that has less solute (dissolved material) relative to another)
isotonic solution a solution that has equal solute (dissolved material) relative to another
lysis rupturing (exploding) of a cell membrane due to the inward movement of water
Is salt water hypotonic, hypertonic, or isotonic? hypertonic
Is distilled water hypotonic, hypertonic, or isotonic? hypotonic
Is saline solution hypotonic, hypertonic, isotonic? isotonic
What solution will a cell loose water? hypertonic
What solution will a cell swell and possibly lyse? hypotonic
Which solution will the cell stay the same size? isotonic
Name of the starch indicator and what color will it turn in the presence of starch? -iodine/lughole's solution -amber to blue/black
Name of glucose indicator and what color will it turn in the presence of glucose? -Benedict's solution -blue to yellow/red -must be heated

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
