Cell Transport Vocab

This is to help me study my sience vocab.

TermDefinition
selectively permeable Property of cell membranes that allows some substances to pass across it, while others cannot.
passive transport Movement of dissolved materials across a cell membrane without using cellular energy.
diffusion Process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
osmosis The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane.
active transport Movement of materials across a cell membrane using cellular energy (low concentration to high concentration).
endocytosis Process by which the cell membrane takes particles into the cell by changing shape and engulfing the particles.
exocytosis The process by which the vacuole surrounding particles fuses with the cell membrane to allow large particles to leave the cell.
phospholipids A molecule that makes up the bilayer of biological membranes, having a polar, hydrophilic (phosphate) head and two non-polar, hydrophobic (lipid) tails.
protein channels A protein that allows the transport of specific substances across a cell membrane through facilitated diffusion.
facilitated diffusion Movement of specific molecules across cell membranes through protein channels.
hypotonic Referring to a solution that, when surrounding a cell, will cause the cell to gain water.
hypertonic Referring to a solution that, when surrounding a cell, will cause the cell to lose water.
Strawberry sprinkled with sugar. Causes water to move out of the strawberry.
Fresh water fish in salt water tank. Water would move out of the fish's cells and into the saltwater. The cells of the fish would shrivel.
Salt water fish in fresh water tank. Water would move into the fish's cells and cause the cells to swell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
