The Circulatory

The Circulatory System

QuestionAnswer
what is the circulatory system a group of organs that allows blood to transport (carry) substances to the cells of the body
Why do we need a circulatory system? The circulatory system allows cells in our body to obtain: nutrients from food, oxygen in order to get energy It allows the cells in our bodies to get rid of wastes such as carbon dioxide and water
What are the Functions of Blood Transports oxygen to cells Transports food to cells Transports waste materials away from cells Helps fight infection Helps keep the body at the correct temperature
What is blood made of? Blood is a type of tissue Blood is made up a straw-coloured liquid called plasma There are 3 types of blood cells floating in plasma: Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets
what is the function of plasma Heat is transferred throughout the body by the plasma
what is the function of red blood cells carry oxygen to the body cells Red blood cells have a red pigment (colour) called haemoglobin Oxygen attaches onto haemoglobin when it enters the blood The oxygen releases once it arrives at other body cells
what is the function of white blood cells fight Infections by engulfing them
what is the function of platelets clots blood when blood vessels are damaged
Where are blood cells made? Most blood cells are made in bone marrow (soft substance found in the centre of bone)
what do blood vessels do blood vessels carry blood around the body
name the three types of blood vessels Arteries Veins Capillaries
describe the walls of each blood vessel Arteries have thick walls and they are very strong They are usually deeper in the body than veins Veins have thinner walls and are easier to damage than arteries Capillaries have walls that are only one cell thick
which blood vessels bring blood away and towards the heart Arteries=Away Veins=Towards
what do the capillaries do weave in through organs of the body to deliver substances to the body, take away waste from the body's cell
what colour is deoxygenated blood blue
what is the purpose of valves Blood in the veins is not under any pressure and is in danger of flowing backwards To prevent this from happening there are Valves in Veins to prevent backflow
why are there no valves in the arteries Blood will not flow backwards in arteries because the blood is under pressure due to the heart pumping
what is the heart made of The heart is made of cardiac muscle
does the heart tire It does not tire
what is the function of the heart The heart pumps oxygenated blood (blood containing oxygen) all around the body It also sends deoxygenated blood(blood that does NOT contain oxygen) to the lungs to remove carbon dioxide and collect oxygen
Why does exercise increase heart rate? Exercise requires energy We get energy from respiration Respiration needs oxygen When we exercise our body needs more oxygen so more respiration can occur Blood brings oxygen to cells so it needs to move faster to get more oxygen in for more respiration
how does the heart and arteries interact with each other Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart and towards the other organs of the body
how does the heart and veins interact with each other Veins are the blood vessels that carry blood away from the other organs of the body and back to the heart
how do arteries and and capillaries interact with each other Arteries break up into smaller blood vessels called capillaries to get very close to cells
how do veins and capillaries interact with each other When capillaries coming away from an organ join back together again they join up as a vein
