Term | Definition |
---|---|
aphantic | A fine-grained igneous rock with crystals too small to see, even with a microscope, often extrusive igneous rocks |
chemical sedimentary rock | A rock composed of chemical precipitates; one form of nonclastic sedimentary rock. |
clast | A piece of broken or eroded rock. They can range in size from microscopic particles to boulder-sized fragments. |
clastic sedimentary rock | A rock made from the eroded fragments of other rocks. |
contact metamophism | Metamorphism caused mainly by contact with high-temperature magma or lava. This kind still occurs today in isolated areas where active volcanism takes place. |
dynamic metamophism | Metamorphism that occurred when conditions rapidly changed in rocks; may still occur in rocks near very active faults. |
foliated metamorphic rock | Metamorphic rock containing flattened or flaky mineral crystals, giving it a banded layered appearance. |
grain | Pieces and particles of mineral crystals, rock fragments, and even fossils in a rock that determines its texture. |
igneous rock | A rock formed from solidified magma or lava. |
metamorphic rock | A rock that has been altered in its basic characteristic by heat, pressure, and/or hydrothermal chemical action since it was created or formed. |
nonclastic sedimentary rock | ?? A property of sedimentary rocks indicating the absence of any smaller eroded rock particles embedded within the matrix. Such rock is believed to have formed when dissolved minerals in seawater or groundwater precipitated. |
nonfoliated metamorphic rock | ?? Metamorphic rock that is not banded or layered. |

regional metamorphism | |
rock | A relatively hard natural substance formed from one or more minerals or organic materials. |
rock cycle | A naturalistic concept that supposedly describes how the earth's rocks are recycled between the crust and the upper mantle. One complete cycle would require millions of years based on the current rate of geologic processes. |
sedimentary rock | Rock consisting of particles of sediment that have been bonded together by natural cements; solids that have precipitated from water solutions. |
texture | A term that describes the size of the crystals in a mineral. Large crystal sizes give a rock a coarse texture, while very small crystals give a rock a fine texture. |
