Study Guide Questions

QuestionAnswer
Describe what the endomembrane system is of a cell >Consists of: -nuclear envelope -endoplasmic reticulum -golgi apparatus -lysosomes -vacuoles -plasma membrane >synthesizes and transports proteins, metabolism, moves lipids, and detoxifies poisions.
How do the components of the endomembrane system work together? The components work together to regulate protein traffic and perform metabolic functions.
What functions do organelles provide for the cell? -nuclear envelope: separates contents of nucleus from cytoplasm -golgi apparatus: protein factory & transport -lysosomes: digestive compartments (for macromolecules) -vacuoles: storage -plasma membrane: selective permeable boundary that protects cell
How are plant cells different from animal cells? Plant Cells: have cell wall, chloroplasts, large central vacuole Animal Cells: centrosome, lysosome
How are chloroplasts and mitochondria the same? Different? Same:change energy from one form to another chloroplasts: photosynthesis, found in plants mitochondria: cellular respiration, found in plants and animals
What are the roles of the cytoskeleton? Organizes structures & activities in the cell -mechanical support -cell movement
What structures are components of cytoskeleton and what is their funciton? -microtubules: shape & support cell, serve as tracks for organelles w motor proteins to move -cilia/flagella: move fluid over tissue -microfilaments: bears tension to support shape -intermediate filaments:(only in animals) bears tension, more permanent
How are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells similar and diferent? s: dna, ribosomes, cell membrane, cytoplasm pro:simple, no nucleus, small, peptidoglycan cell wall, unicellular, no organelles. (bacteria/protists) eu:nucleus,chitin/cellulose cell wall, uni/multicellular, organelles (plant/animal/fungi/protists)
Endoplasmic reticulum more than 1/2 total membrane in euk. cells. smooth: lipid synthesis, stores calcium. produce steroids rough:ribosomes attached, membrane factory, secretory proteins

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
