| crystal | a solid that has a regular repeating arrangement of atoms |
| gemstones | certain crystals that are considered more valuable than others |
| polymer | long chains of lots and lots of repeating small molecules over and over again |
| plastics | man-made polymers that are light and hard to break |
| acid | a substance that tastes sour, conducts electricity, ruins metal, and donates hydrogen ions |
| base | the chemical opposite of an acid |
| antacid | a base that works against the acid that upsets your stomach |
| pH | potential for Hydrogen; a scale that determines whether a substance is an acid or a base |
| chemical reaction | a reaction that occurs when two or more chemical substances interact with each other and change into different chemical substances |
| physical reaction | a reaction that changes the form of something, but does not change the molecules |
| reactants | the substances that you start with in a chemical reaction |
| products | the substances that the reactants make during a chemical reaction |
| endothermic reaction | when the reactants absorb energy during a chemical reaction |
| exothermic reaction | when energy is released during a chemical reaction |
| compound | a combination of two or more different elements |
