| chronic pain | pain that lasts beyond the usual time that it would take for the tissues to heal |
| pain threshold | the point at which the person becomes aware of pain |
| pain tolerance | the level of pain that a person can endure before taking action to seek relief |
| radiating pain | pain felt at the site of tissue damage and in nearby areas |
| pain scale | a tool or guide that helps to translate a person's subjective rating of his or her pain into an objective measurement |
| breakthrough pain | pain that occurs before the next regularly scheduled dose of pain medication |
| NREM sleep | Quiet, typically dreamless sleep in which rapid eye movements are absent; divided into four stages; also called quiet sleep. |
| REM sleep | Rapid eye movement sleep, a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur. Also known as paradoxical sleep, because the muscles are relaxed (except for minor twitches) but other body systems are active. |
