Science Unit 1:

Engineering and Technology pg 1-33

brainstorming Collecting as many ideas as you can, however good you think they are.
constraint A real world limit on the solution you are designing, for example, safety, time, money, or materials.
criteria The desirable features of a solution.
erosion The process of moving sediment from one place to another.
technology Objects designed by humans, and they all solve a problem or meet a need.
engineered items Created by man; examples: computer, chair, phone.
not engineered items Created by nature; examples: plants, insects.
Where are you least likely to see technology? In nature, like on a hike, because natural living things are not technology.
How do engineers use science? Engineers use scientific discoveries to help design and make new technologies.
How do scientists use engineering? Advances in engineering lead to advances in science.
True or False. Both scientists and engineers see a problem and ask questions about it. True.
Where was the Hubble telescope fixed? The Hubble telescope was fixed in space.
How did scientists know there was a problem with the Hubble telescope? It was taking blurry photos.
What was the problem with the Hubble telescope? The Hubble's main mirror had been built incorrectly. It was ground to the wrong shape.
True or false. Scientists and engineers follow many of the same methods to find answers to problems. True.
Who does it... Scientist, Engineer, or Both? Analyze test data to find the best boat design. Engineer (Designing a boat!)
Who does it... Scientist, Engineer, or Both? Ask questions to find out it the Earth's surface is changing. Scientist. (Asking questions to gain knowledge.)
Who does it... Scientist, Engineer, or Both. Plan and carry out a fair test. Both!
Who does it... Scientist, Engineer, or Both?Use a model to test a new speaker design. Engineer. (Designing a speaker.)
What do engineers and scientists have in common? Both use models, math, and computational thinking. Both carry out fair tests and analyze data and share information.
Who does it... Scientist, Engineer, or Both?Use evidence to argue for the best explanation. Scientist. (Using knowledge to prove a point....but not creating something.)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
