Unit 3 Science
Force, Motion, and Energy - 5th grade
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Conductor | property of a material to allow heat or electrical energy to flow through |
Insulator | material to keep heat or electrical energy from passing through easily |
Heat Energy | the energy that moves between objects of different temperatures |
Thermometer | instrument for measuring temperature |
Celsius or centigrade | pertaining to or noting a temperature scale in which 0 degrees represents the ice point and 100 degrees represents the steam point |
Degrees | a unit of measure, as of temperature or pressure, marked off on the scale of a measuring instrument |
Kinetic Energy | energy an object has because of motion |
Energy | The ability to cause changes in matter |
Light Energy | a form of energy that can travel through space and lies partly within the visible range |
Sound Energy | mechanical vibrations transmitted through an elastic medium, traveling in air at a speed of approximately 1087 feet (331 meters) per second at sea level |
Electrical Energy | Energy that comes from electrical current |
Thermal Energy | The total amount of kinetic energy of the particles in a substance |
Mechanical Energy | the total potential and kinetic energy of an object |
Solar Energy | the energy of sunlight |
Wind Energy | wind power |
Hydro Energy | water power |
Geothermal Energy | the type of energy produced naturally beneath Earth's surface |
Biofuel Energy | a fuel produced by biological materials, such as wood |
Unbalanced Force | when one force acting on an object is less than or greater than another force acting on the same object |
Force | Push or pull, twist or turn, which may cause a change in motion |
Friction | Force between 2 surfaces |
Balanced Forces | when the forces acting on an object are opposite and equal |
Newtons | The measurement for the amount of force |
Inertia | When a property of matter remains the same - objects in motion stay in motion; objects at rest stay at rest |
Push | the act of applying force to move something away |
Pull | to draw or haul a thing towards oneself |
