Vocabulary for Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Kinetic energy | energy an object possesses by being in motion |
| Potential energy | energy that results from the position or shape of an object |
| Gravitational potential energy | a type of potential energy that is related to an object’s vertical position – how high it is above the ground |
| Elastic potential energy | a type of potential energy that is associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched |
| Energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| Motion | takes energy, an object is in motion if its position changes relative to another object |
| Force | A push or pull, relationship between energy and motion involves forces |
| Work | exerting a force on an object that causes the object to change its motion in the same direction in which you exert the force |
| Power | the rate at which work is done, it equals the amount of work done on an object in a unit of time |
| Mechanical energy | the energy an object has due to its motion, shape and position or a combination of these factors |
| Nuclear energy | type of potential energy stored in the nucleus, can be released through a nuclear reaction |
| Thermal energy | the total potential and kinetic energy of particles |
| Chemical energy | form of potential energy, results from the relative positions of the particles within a material |
| Electrical energy | the energy of electrical charges |
| Electromagnetic radiation | a form of kinetic energy that travels through space in waves, does not need a medium to travel through |
| Law of conservation of energy | Energy either moves from one place to another or changes forms, but no energy is created or destroyed |
