Unit 4B: Slow and Rapid Changes to Earth - Natural Resources Vocab & Definition

TermDefinition
earthquake a sudden release of energy under the Earth's surface that makes the ground shake or crack - Rapid Change
landslide the rapid, downward slide of rocks, soil, or mud - large mass of soil and rocks that suddenly move down the side of a steep surface
volcano an opening in the Earth's surface, like a mountain or hill, where lava can flow onto the surface during an eruption - the force that causes new land to be formed - Rapid Change
erupt a mountain or hill to suddenly become active and break open through the release of lava, ash, and gasses from a volcano
rapid change changes that happen quickly to the Earth's surface - examples: earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunami
slow change changes to the Earth's surface that happens over a long period of time - examples: erosion, weathering, and droughts
landforms a physical structure of land on Earth that occurs naturally - examples: mountains, valleys, hills, plateaus, glaciers, plains
geologist a person who studies Earth's rocks and minerals
