| spontaneous generation | the idea of life coming from nothing, just appearing |
| observation | the act of noticing and describing events carefully |
| hypothesis | explanation for an observation based on prior knowledge |
| experiment | scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact |
| independent variable | what we change |
| dependent variable | data we collect from an experiment |
| constant | group that is unchanged |
| experimental group | exposed to independent variable, what we are testing |
| control group | no variable is introduced, what we test against |
| probability | helps predict the likeliness of an experimental result occurring from chance |
| sample size | the bigger the sample size, the more accurate results |
| bias | when scientists influence the data to produce a specific result |
| blind experiment | prevents the experimental subjects from knowing what group they are in |
| peer review | when other scientists review and critique the design, data collection, and analysis |
| scientific law | a description of an observed phenomenon |
| order | the repeating hexagon shapes in a bee’s honeycomb |
| adaptations | the protective hard shell on a tortoise |
| response to stimuli | reflexively pulling your hand away after touching something hot |
| homeostasis/regulation | a jackrabbit releasing excess heat from its ears |
| energy processing | a plant absorbing energy in sunlight to produce sugars |
| reproduction | a bacterial cell dividing in two |
| growth and development | all butterflies pass through the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages |
