| groundwater | is the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand and rock |
| water cycle | shows the continuous movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere |
| evaporation | happens when a liquid turns into a gas |
| transpiration | the exhalation of water vapor through the stomata. "plants lose more than 90 percent of their water through transpiration" |
| precipitation | the action or process of precipitating a substance from a solution. |
| tributary | a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake. |
| watershed | is a land area that channels rainfall and snow-melt to creeks, streams, and rivers, |
| divide | separate or be separated into parts. |
| reservoir | a large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply. |
| eutrophication | excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water |
| salinity | the concentrations of salts in water or soils |
| sonar | Sonar is a technique that uses sound propagation to navigate |
| seamount | are underwater mountains that rise hundreds or thousands of feet from the seafloor |
| trench | a long, narrow ditch. |
| continental shelf | the area of seabed around a large landmass where the sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean |
| abyssal plain | the largest habitat on earth |
| mid-ocean ridge | is a continuous range of underwater volcanoes that wraps around the globe like seams on a baseball |
| current | belonging to the present time; happening or being used or done now. |
| Coriolis effect | an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) |
| Climate | the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period. |
| El Nino | Little Boy, or Christ Child in Spanish. |
| La Nina | is characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific, compared to El Niño, which is characterized by unusually warm ocean |
