APES Unit 3

Questions

QuestionAnswer
Explain boom and bust cycles. What type of species typically experience this? R-selected species go through this phenomenon. It's due to fast reproductive rates and a large amount of offspring being born in one pregnancy causing unstable population growth cycling between periods of overpopulation and die off/regrowth.
What kind of growth rate do K-selected species follow? What shape is it? They grow at a logistic growth rate which is shaped like an S.
What kind of survivorship curves do R-selected and K-selected species follow? K-selected species follow type 1 and 2. R-selected species follow type 3.
What factors determine carrying capacity? Biotic potential ans environmental resistence.
What happens to a population as it begins to reach carrying capacity? Why? As a population reaches its carrying capacity, its growth rate will decrease as resources become scarce.
Why do certain species live together in "clumps"? For protection, reproductive opportunities, and help finding food.
How has the deer population changed in the last century? 1900, deer habitats were destroyed and there was unregulated hunting. 1920-1930, laws were implemented to protect deer. Now, the deer population has exploded allowing them to eat plants, cause traffic accidents, and spread lyme disease.
How can the deer population be controlled? 1) PZP, deer birth control shot 2) Loosen hunting restrictions
What do age structure diagrams provide? They can be used to interpret population growth rates.
What are some factors that are contributing urban sprawl? 1) Low cost gas 2) SALT (State and Local Tax) 3) Tax laws encourage ownership
Why is the United States TFR dropping? 1) Education 2) Birth control 3) Condoms 4) Abortion

What are some density-independent factors? 1) Major storms 2) Fires 3) Heat waves 4) Droughts

Name some events displaying nature attempting to control population. 1) The Irish Potatoes Famine 2) Bubonic/Black Plague 3) AIDS 4) COVID-19
Why do underdeveloped countries typically have large families 1) High infant mortality rate 2) Old age security 3) Children are an ECONOMIC asset 4) Status of women
