How does a food web differ from s food chain? A food chain is a set of interconnected food webs while a food chain is a single network of energy transfer.
What are the trophic levels? Producers->Primary Consumers->Secondary Consumers->Tertiary Consumers // Decomposers and Detritvores.
What is the 10% rule? Only 10% of energy is maintained through each trophic level.
What does the water cycle do? Purifies, recycles, and distributes water.
Where is the nitrogen cycle present in nature? Nitrogen fixing bacteria in the soil and plant roots convert nitrogen gas to ammonia. Nitrifying bacteria converts ammonia to nitrates or nitrites which plants can absorb.
Where is the phosphorus cycle present in nature? Phosphorous is moved through the biosphere typically found in rocks, typically found in rocks and sediments.
Where is the sulfur cycle present in nature? Sulfur is released through weathering and used by microbes and plants.
How many mass extinctions have there been? There have been five mass extinctions and we are thought to in the mixed of the 6th.
What is Maggot Debridement Therapy? the use of maggots on wounds to eat dead tissue that wouldn't heal.
What are the principles of sustainability? 1) Biodiversity 2) Chemical Cycling 3) Solar Energy
How are we living unsustainably? 1) Pollution 2) Over consumption 3) Resource Degradation 4) Overpopulation 5)Ecological Footprint
What are some factors that are causing us to live unsustainably? 1) Poverty, people cannot afford to love sustainably 2) Cultural changes or revolutions 3) Uneducated/Careless people
What can limit a population? 1) Availability of water, food, and other resources 2) Carrying Capacity 3) Disease/Illness 4) Natural disaters
What are some end products of anaerobic respiration? 1) Methane Gas 2) Ethyl Alcohol 3) Acetic Acid (vinegar) 4) Hydrogen Sulfide
What are the reasons for extinction? H-abitat destruction I-nvasive Species P-ollution P-opulation growth (human) O-verexplotation
What are some characteristics of water? Water is a universal solvent, remains a liquid of a wide temp. range, and changes temp. slowly.
How do humans alter the water cycle? 1) Withdrawing large amounts of freshwater 2) Clearing of vegetation and soil 3) Polluting water 4) Contribute to climate change
What is the difference between physical and chemical changes? Physical changes do not alter an item's chemical make up. Chemical changes happen through nuclear fission.
Where is the carbon cycle present in nature? The relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration, photosynthetic producers take in CO2 and organisms left off CO2.
What is the salinity of saltwater? 3.5%
