Harcourt Science Vocabulary - Gr 3 - Soil

QuestionAnswer
soil The loose material in which plants can grow in the upper layer of Earth
humus The part of the soil made up of decayed parts of once-living things
topsoil The top layer of soil made up of the smallest grains and the most humus
clay A type of soil made up of very small grains; it holds water well
loam A type of topsoil that is rich in minerals and has lots of humus
resource A material that is found in nature and that is used by living things
conservation The saving of resources by using them carefully
strip cropping A type of planting that uses strips of thick grass or clover between strips of crops
contour plowing A type of plowing for growing crops; creates rows of crops around the sides of a hill instead of up and down
