| Abstraction | to simplify an idea into an unrealistic visual representation |
| Background | upper third of an illustration, usually has a sense of being furthest from the viewer, or behind central subject |
| Body Language | the facial expressions and gestures provided by the character which convey attitudes, feelings and personality |
| Borders | frames used to enclose text or illustrations |
| Composition | what is included and where it is placed |
| Double-page illustrations | illustrations that spread over both sides of an open book, ideal for landscapes |
| Dual Image Covers | Cover images which differ from front to back |
| Foreground | Lower third of an illustration, usually conveys a sense of being nearest to the viewer |
| Framing (1) | Way the subject is framed by surrounding images, text or patterns |
| Framing (2) | Narrative structuring device where an object, topic or expression starts and ends the story, usually with symbolic significance |
| Gaze | The way the subject engages their audience through he direction of their eyes |
| Gaze (demand) | Character looks directly out of the page and at the reader, engaging them in a direct interpersonal exchange |
| Gaze (offer) | Characters eyes are not looking at the reader |
| Illumination | Effect of lighting and shading in an image |
| Illustration | A drawn, painted, photographed or created image |
| Intertextuality | References to images or ideas from other texts to make a point |
| Layout | Arrangements of elements or different components on a page or opening |
| Line | Different lines cause different emotions and meanings |
| Middle Ground | The central third of an illustration, usually the centre 'space' of the scene |
| Motif | Recurring images or ideas throughout the text which usually have distinctive meaning and significance |
| Panels | Broken apart images for effect |
| Reading Path | Patterns and shapes in unusual positioning to lead the eyes of the reader |
| Realism | Attempt by the composer to create a realistic and believable representation of the crowd |
| Salience | Effect of making one image or character stand out and draw the readers attention |
| Saturation | Degree of darkness and richness of colours |
| Shapes/Contours | Different shapes convey different emotions and meanings |
| Single-Paged illustrations | illustrations confined to one side of an opening |
| Symbols/Symbolism | Use of an object or image to convey meaning and represent ideas or qualities |
| Vectors | The line that our eyes follow as we look at a visual |
| Viewer positioning | Viewer is positioned to see the illustration through camera perspectives (shots and angles) |
| Vignettes | Small illustrations integrated into larger illustrations or isolated and balanced against texts |
