TermDefinition
Embryo developing stage of a multicellular organism
Differentiation process during which young, immature (unspecialized) cells reach their mature (specialized) form and function
Totipotent cells that are able to develop into any type of cell found in the body including the cells that make up the extraembryonic membranes and placenta (ALL)
Blastocyst stage of early development in mammals that consists of a hollow ball of cells
Pluripotent cells that are capable of developing into most, but not all, of the body’s cell types (ALMOST ALL)
Stem Cell unspecialized cell that is capable of evolving into many different types of specialized cells within the body
Multipotent cell with limited potential to develop into many types of differentiated cells (SOME)
Binary fission type of asexual reproduction in which an organism replicates its DNA and divides in half, producing two identical daughter cells
Malignant tumors that invade surrounding tissues and spread throughout the body
Metastasis cancer cells break away from the original (primary) tumor, travel through the blood system, and form a new tumor in other organs or tissues of the body
Spindle a protein structure that divides the genetic material in a cell and the protein equally divides the chromosomes into two daughter cells during both types of nuclear division (mitosis and meiosis)
