BIO 223 Exam 3

Nervous System Overview, Brain, Spinal Cord

QuestionAnswer
What makes up the nervous system? Brain & Spinal Cord Receptors of Sense Organs (eyes, ears) Nerves that connect to other systems
What are the two types of cells within nervous tissue? Neuron Neuroglia (glial cells)
Neurons in nervous tissue are important for intercellular communication
Neuroglia (glial cells) are: - Essential for survival and functioning of neurons - Preserve structure of nervous tissue
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is part of what division of the nervous system? Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Visceral Motor Division = Autonomic Nervous System
CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord
The CNS is made up of: Nervous tissue, connective tissue, and blood vessels
The CNS functions to process and coordinate sensory data from inside and outside the body
Motor commands control activities of peripheral organs (skeletal muscles)
What are the higher functions of the brain? intelligence, memory, learning, and emotion
The PNS includes all nervous tissue OUTSIDE the CNS and ENS
The PNS delivers what kind of information to the CNS? Sensory (Afferent)
The PNS carries motor commands to peripheral tissues (efferent)
Peripheral Nerves are bundles of axons with connective tissues and blood vessels
What do peripheral nerves do? Carry sensory information and motor commands
Cranial Nerves are part of what division of the nervous system? CNS or PNS PNS- cranial nerves connect to the brain (CNS)
Spinal Nerves are part of the PNS because they attach to the spinal cord (CNS)
Functional Divisions of the PNS include Afferent and Efferent Division
Afferent Division of the PNS carries sensory information from RECEPTORS in peripheral tissues and organs to the CNS
Efferent Division of the PNS carries motor commands from CNS (brain or spinal cord) to MUSCLES< GLANDS, and ADIPOSE TISSUE
Effectors of PNS are target organs that respond to motor commands
Receptors of PNS detect changes or respond to stimuli
Receptors of the PNS may be neurons or specialized cells
The Efferent Division of the PNS consists of the Somatic Nervous System (SNS) and the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Somatic Nervous System (Efferent Division of PNS) controls: skeletal muscle contractions and BOTH voluntary and involuntary reflexes
Autonomic Nervous System (Efferent Division of PNS) controls subconscious actions, contractions of smooth and cardiac muscle, and glandular secretions
The Sympathetic division of the ANS has what type of effect? Stimulating
The parasympathetic division of the ANS has what type of effect? Relaxing

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
