TermDefinition
Compact Bone Dense, hard bone that forms the thin outer layer of bones.
Periosteum Thin, skin-like membrane covering bones.
Spongy Bone In the hollow part of the bone and at the ends of long bones, stores red marrow
Marrow Located in the hollow center of a bone or inside its spongy bone. Red Marrow - produces new red and white blood cells. Yellow Marrow - stores fat.
Cartilage It covers the ends of bones at the joints to allow smooth movement, so the bones won't grind against each other
Immovable Joints Joints that do not move at all
Movable Joints These are the joints that enable you to move your body.
Ball and Socket Allows movement in all directions
Hinge Allows movement only back & forth like a door hinge
Pivot Allows rotating movement
Gliding Bones that slide against each other in different ways
Ligaments connects bone to bone
Tendons connects muscle to bone
Muscles Pull on the bones to make them move
Biceps Muscles on top of the humerus that pull the radius
Triceps Muscles on the bottom of the humerus that pull the ulna
Cardiac Muscles Found only in the heart, it is involuntary and never tires
Smooth Muscle Mostly involuntary – makes up many internal organs
Vertebrates Animals with an internal skeleton
Evolution Changes in species of animals due to natural selection
Axial Skeleton The sacrum, coccyx, vertebrae, ribs, sternum, and skull
Appendicular Skeleton All the bones that are not on the Axial Skeleton
