questionanswer
Kinetic Energy(what happens to kinetic energy when a substance is heated/cooled) heat= kinetic energy is faster cooled= kinetic energy is slower
What do the particles of a solid, liquid, and gas look like? solid= tightly bonded, vibrate liquid= loosely bonded, flow gas= not bonded, bounce
What happens to particles when they are heated and cooled? heated= expand (gets bigger) cooled= contract (gets smaller)
... shows the biggest change when heated or cooled gas -always moving , heat= really fast, cooled= kinda fast, don't stop
... shows the least amount of change when heated or cooled solid -always still (vibrating), heat= moves fast, cooled= moves slow
Question: If a ball metal ball was stuck in a metal hoop, How would you take them apart heat the hoop because you want that to expand cool the ball because you want that to contract then ball will fall out of the hoop
Question: If a syringe is closed off and has water in it what will happen if you push up or down up= compressing the water particles= no change down= expanding the space so that water can flow= air bubble
Question: (liquids) What happens when you place a bottle with water in hot or cold water hot water= particles expanded/ went up cold water= particles contracted/ decreased
Question: (gases) What happens to air when it gets hot and cold hot= particles expand and get farther apart from each other, while bouncing off of each other really fast cold= particles contract and come closer together, while becoming slow in speed
Question: (solids) What happens when a solid are heated and cooled heat= vibrating increases which pulls them farther apart= expanding cooled= there is a loss in kinetic energy which allows the particles to connect or bond together= contracting
What is kinetic energy anything in motion
... can increase an objects kinetic energy heat
... can decrease an objects kinetic energy cooling
concrete is in the heat is an example of... expansion =particles are really fast in the heat so they move far apart
concrete is in the cold s an example of... contraction =particles are slow in the cool so they come together
water bottle with air in the... is an example of contractions cold
water bottle with air in the... is an example of expansion heat
thermometer in ... made the water go up hot water
thermometer in cold water made the water... go down

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
