Unit 3,Lessons 3 & 4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lithosphere | The solid, outer layer of Earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle. |
| Asthensosphere | The soft layer of the mantle on which the tectonic plates move. |
| Tectonic plate | The theory that Earth's outer layer is made up of large; moving pieces called tectonic plates; the theory explains how plates interact and how those interactions relate to processes such as earthquakes and mountain building. |
| Deformation | the bending tilting and breaking of Earth's crust |
| Shear Stress | Causes materials to twist or become distorted |
| Compression | can cause , is rocks are squeezed and shortened |
| Tension | stressed that lengthens a material pulls a material apart |
| Convergent boundary | the boundary between tectonic plates that are colliding |
| Divergent boundary | the boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other |
| Transform boundary | lights between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other that are colliding |
| Earthquake | A movement are trembling of the grounds that is caused by sudden release of energy rocks along a fault move |
| Focus | the location within Earth on the fault at which of the first motion earthquake occurs |
| Epicenter | The point on Earth's surface directly above an earthquake starting point or focus |
| Tectonic plate boundary | The block of lithosphere that consists of the crusts and rigid, outermost part of the mantle |
| Fault | a break in a body of rock along which one block moves a relative to another |
| Elastic rebound | The sudden return of elastically deformed drop to its undeformed shape |
