Concert Choir Vocab

Vocab for Guide Terms

TermDefinition
Crescendo: To gradually get louder.
Decrescendo/Diminuendo: To gradually get quieter.
Coda: a concluding section of music (usually previously stated material) that is attached to the end of a piece, usually after a repeat.
Fermata: hold the note out until the conductor cuts you off.
Key signature: 2nd thing we see in the music, dictates what key we are in (which accidentals are used for the entire piece)
Accidentals- a symbol that changes the quality of a pitch
a. Flatlowers: note by half of a step
b.Sharp: raises note by half of a step
c. Natural - negates the effects of a flat or a sharp
D.S -Dal Segno: translates to “To the sign” meaning go back to the symbol (like the one on page 4 of Sleigh Ride)
D.C - Da Capo: translates to “to the head/top” meaning go back to the beginning.
D.S Al Coda: go back to the sign, and then go to the coda once you see the coda symbol.
D.C Al Coda: go back to the beginning, and then go to the coda once you see the coda symbol.
Repeat Signs: used to change the form of a song. You repeat between the two bar line symbols. The symbol look like two lines with two dots.
Clef: dictates the notes that appear on the staff, first thing we see in the music.
Diphthong: when two vowels sounds are next to one another (this is for Chamber only)
Staccato: short, detached, separated
Legato: smooth, connected
4 Measure phrases
Shadow Vowels: a vowel, specifically a schwa, that is usually added to the end of a word to accentuate the consonant it is attached to.
Caesura: a brief pause in the music, the symbol is two parallel diagonal lines a brief pause in the music, the symbol is two parallel diagonal lines
