Cells Biology
Yr 11 Biology Course Module 1: "cells as the basis of life"
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Modern Cell Theory | 1. All living things are composed of cells 2. Cells are the basic unit of all organisms 3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells |
| Prokaryote | A unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus and membrane bound organelles. |
| Eukaryote | A cell that contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles. |
| organelle | Any of the organised or specialised structures within a living cell. E.g, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, etc. |
| plasma membrane | A microscopic membrane of lipids and proteins which forms the external boundary of the cytoplasm in a cell or encloses a vacuole, and regulates the passage of molecules in and out of the cytoplasm. |
| homeostasis | A relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain. |
| cytoplasm | A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended that contains chemical nutrients. |
| cytoskeleton | The large network consisting of protein fibers and other molecules that gives shape and structure to cells in the body. |
| ribosome | A structure found inside cells that is involved in making proteins. It particularly helps link amino acids together to form proteins. |
| nucleus | The structure in a cell that controls and regulates the activities of the cell (e.g., growth and metabolism) and contains chromosomes which is where DNA is found. |
| nucleolus | An area inside the nucleus of a cell that is made up of RNA and proteins and is where ribosomes are made. |
| endoplasmic reticulum | A complex network of tubular membranes exclusively present in the cytoplasm of the eukaryotic cell. |
| Golgi Complex (or Golgi Apparatus) | A membrane-bound organelle found in eukaryotic cells that is made up of a series of flattened stacked pouches called cisternae. It helps make and package materials to be transported out of the cell. |
| selectively permeable | A property of biological membranes that allows some substances to pass across it while others cannot; also called semipermeable membrane. |
| lysosomes | A cell organelle filled with enzymes needed to break down certain materials in the cell. |
| mitochondria | An organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of cellular respiration and energy production occur. (AKA "the powerhouse of the cell") |
| chloroplast | An organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy (used in the process of photosynthesis) |
| vacuoles | Cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates. |
| cell wall | A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. |
| vesicle | A small, membrane-bound sac that transports subjects in and out of cells. |
