| atomic theory | the idea that everything is made of small particles |
| compound | a matter made of two or more elements, such as water, oxygen, and salt |
| molecule | the smallest particle of a compound that is made out of atoms |
| conclude | to make a statement with data and facts* |
| temperature | the measure of how hot or cold something is |
| mass | the amount of matter an object has |
| volume | the amount of space an object takes up |
| organize | to arrange something to make it easier to understand* |
| solid | matter with a definite shape and volume that is made of vibrating particles |
| liquid | matter with a definite volume but no definite shape |
| gas | a form of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume |
| differentiate | to identify the differences between two or more objects* |
| physical change | a change in traits—such as color, size, and shape— that does not change what the substance is made of |
| establish | to show an idea* |
| chemical change | the process where one or more kinds of matter changes into one or more different kinds of matter |
| conservation of matter | the scientific law that matter cannot be made or destroyed, only transferred and changed |
| chemical reaction | a change where one or more substances are turned into one or more different substances, usually caused by heat or mixing new substance |
