TermDefinition
galaxy* a massive group of stars, gas, dust, and other OBJECTS orbiting stars in space, held together by gravity. STARS, GAS, DUST # main types: Spiral, Elliptical, Irregular
Milky Way* our home galaxy. Our solar system is located in an outside spiral
star GLOWING BALL-- a giant ball of hot, glowing gases smaller/larger/brighter than others based on distance. All except the Sun are so far away that they look like points of light.
solar system the planets, asteroids, and comets that orbit a star, as well as the planets’ moons. STAR SYSTEM SOL/SUN/SOLAR
inner planets 4 SMALL ROCKY planets closest orbits to the sun No or few moons Name: 1. Mercury 2. Venus 3. Earth* 4.Mars** (Asteroid Belt) 3/WE
orbit* GOING AOUND---the circular movement of an object, such as a planet or moon, around an object that can hold it in place with gravity, such as a sun or large planet. Larger orbit = Longer Year
moon a large, round piece of rock that revolves/orbits around a planet.
outer planet 1 2 3 4 GASSY GIANTS -- 4 large planets farthest obits from the sun made of ice and gases Many moons Names: . (Asteroid Belt) 5. Jupiter, 6. Saturn, 7. Uranus, 8. Neptune. J:25. S:274 U:27 N:14
asteroid chunks of rocks in space
comet chunks of rock and ice that orbit the sun leaving trail that looks like a tail. FLYING SNOWBALL WITH TAIL(S)
matter* anything with mass and volume (takes up space) the physical substance that makes up the universe and can exist in states like solid, liquid, or gas
core* the middle or center. Ex, avocado, peach core
Sun* the STAR closest to EARTH. It looks like it is the biggest, but is not. Supplies energy in the form of visible light
Universe* Everything is inside it, EVERYTHING. Universe-Galaxy-Solar System-Planet...
Planet Order* Me Vacuum Every Monday *oO0*0o0O* Jamming S U N --Try your own: MVEMJSUN
Asteroid Belt* located in-between Mars and Jupiter . It separates the small rocky planets from the gassy giants.
Earth* Our small rocky planet located 3rd in line from our star called the Sun. 3/WE 3rd rock from the Sun
Distance* How far away something is. Measured by LENGTH.
Rotation SPINning/turning ON an axis. Ex Rotate a basketball on a finger. 1 rotation = 1 day= 24 hours
Revolution 1 thing going AROUND another. Earth revolves around our star, the Sun. Moons revolve around planets 1 revolution around the Sun= 1 Year= 365 days
Meteoroid/Meteor/Meteorite* Small Asteroid in Space OID In our atmosphere Meteor Shower IN SKY Meteorite, I hope its light because it's ON THE GROUND
Composition* what something is made with.
Center* In the middle
indicates* shows
surface* the outside part or uppermost layer of something
core characteristic Main thing, main trait Example: No matter the topping, a pizza is a pizza
