population ecology

what is growth rate? the speed at which a population increases
what does birth rate mean? new individuals are born
what does death rate mean? individuals dying out
what does emigration mean? individuals moving out of a population
what does immigration mean? individuals moving into a population
what can too small of a population mean? extinction and inbreeding
what does geographic range mean? the area inhabited by a population
what does age structure mean? the number of males and females of each age
what does population density mean? number if individuals in a given area (# of individuals / area)
what happens if there are too few individuals? less chance of reproduction, less chance of sustaining a population or growing
how can individuals be arranged in an area? clustered, evenly spread, random
what are some factors of exponential growth? unlimited resources, fast rapid growth, a J-shape
what are some factors of logistic growth? carrying capacity is met, s-shaped, determined by resources
what does limited factors mean? resources that are limiting a population growth
what are density dependent factors? when a population reaches a certain level these factors can limit the population
what are density independent factors? affects a population regardless of density
what are some examples of density dependent factors? food, shelter, water, disease
what are some examples of density independent factors? weather, rain, drought, fire
