Laser Ranging determines distance to an object by firing a laser beam at it and measuring the time for it to return
Phase appearance of the sunlit face of an object at different points along its orbit as seen from Earth
Elongation angular distance between a planet and the Sun as seen from Earth
Escape Speed required to escape the gravitational pull of another object and leave its orbit
Mare dark-colored and smooth region on the surface of the Moon formed by ancient lava flows
Crater bowl-shaped depression on a planet or moon's surface from collisions with interplanetary debris
Meteorite any part of a meteoroid that is able to strike the surface of a planet or moon
Highlands light-colored regions on the surface of the Moon that are elevated above the maria
Synchronous Rotation when an object's rotational period is equal to its average orbital period (a.k.a. a synchronous orbit)
Resonance circumstance in which two characteristic times are related in some simple way, such as their rotations and/or orbits
Tidal Locking when tidal forces cause a moon to keep the same side facing towards a planet
Tidal Force variation in one body's gravitational force from place to place across another body
Albedo measure of the amount of light reflected from the surface of a celestial object
Apollo Missions program by the United States (NASA) which landed men on the Moon from 1969 to 1972
Eccentricity a measure of the flatness of an ellipse
