earthquakes

| fault | fracture, or break, in the Earth's lithosphere, along which blocks of rock move past each other |
| stress | a force exerted when an object presses on, pulls on, or pushes against another object |
| earthquake | a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden movement of large blocks of rock along a fault |
| seismic waves | vibrations caused by earthquakes |
| focus | the point underground where rocks first begin to move |
| epicenter | the point on the earth's surface directly above the focus |
| seismograph | an instrument that constantly records ground movements |
| seismogram | the printout produced by the seismograph |
| magnitude | strength |
| liquefaction | a process in which the shaking of the ground causes soil to feel and act like a liquid (like thick soup) for a short period of time |
| tsunami | a water wave triggered by an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, or a landslide |
