earthquakes

fault fracture, or break, in the Earth's lithosphere, along which blocks of rock move past each other
stress a force exerted when an object presses on, pulls on, or pushes against another object
earthquake a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden movement of large blocks of rock along a fault
seismic waves vibrations caused by earthquakes
focus the point underground where rocks first begin to move
epicenter the point on the earth's surface directly above the focus
seismograph an instrument that constantly records ground movements
seismogram the printout produced by the seismograph
magnitude strength
liquefaction a process in which the shaking of the ground causes soil to feel and act like a liquid (like thick soup) for a short period of time
tsunami a water wave triggered by an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, or a landslide
