| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| crust | the outermost layer of Earth |
| erosion | the wearing away and removal of rock |
| igneous rock | any rock formed by the cooling of magma or lava |
| inner core | the innermost layer of Earth |
| lava | hot liquid rock located above the Earth's surface |
| magma | hot liquid rock located below the Earth's surface |
| mantle | the thickest layer of Earth, between the core and the crust |
| metamorphic rock | any rock that has been changed by intense heat and pressure |
| outer core | the layer of Earth that lies between the mantle and inner core |
| sediment | small rock fragments |
| sedimentary rock | any rock formed when sediment is compacted or cemented |
| cementation | gluing together of sediments |
| compaction | the squeezing together of sediments from the overhead layers |
| melting | solid to liquid |
| pressure | force applied over a certain area |
| the rock cycle | changes that turn one rock type into another |
| weathering | the breakdown of rocks into small grains |
| cooling | liquid to solid |
| the deeper you go into earth | the more heat and pressure there is |
| examples of igneous rocks | granite and obsidian |
| examples of sedimentary rocks | limestone and sandstone |
| examples of metamorphic rocks | marble and slate |
| convergent boundary | plates move towards each other |
| divergent boundary | plates move away from each other |
| transform boundary | plates move past each other |
| subduction zone | where one plate moves underneath another plate |
| geological features from plate tectonics | mouontain ranges, deep sea trench, mid ocean ridge |
| plate movement causes | earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions |
| cause of convection currents | heat from the earths core |
| convection currents | cause plate movement |
| oceanic crust | denser and thinner |
| continental crust | less dense and thicker |
| seafloor spreading | creation of new sea floor |
| the ring of fire |
