What is a protein (Aka a polypeptide)? A polymer composed of many amino acids
What elements make up nucleic acids? C,H,O,N,P
Antibodies protect the body from pathogens. What type of proteins are they considered? Defense/Protection
Each amino acid is different from one to the other due to- The R-group
What elements make up amino acids? Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Oxygen; also sometimes Sulfur
In red blood cells, a protein is called ________ binds to oxygen. Hemoglobin
How many amino acids are there? 20
What is the function of DNA? Carries genetic information, and provides the blueprint for making proteins
What pentose sugar does DNA use? Deoxyribose
Nucleotides are made up of 3 parts. The 3 parts are called... A sugar, a phosphate and a nitrogenous base
What are the functions of proteins? Structural support, enzymes, transport of molecules, fighting infections.
What is the purpose of enzymes? Speeding up reactions by lowering the activation energy
What do all proteins contain? Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen (sulfur, Zinc, and magnesium ad well)
What is an amino acid? A monomer
What is a protein or a polypeptide? A polymer
What is a peptide? A chain of amino acids, it is several chains put together
What do all amino acids contain? An amino or a N-group (it contains nitrogen) and they all also contain a carboxyl group also known as a C-group ( it contains carbon)
What Identifies it? The R-group
What are amino acids attracted to? Adjacent amino acids
What can proteins function as? Hormones (proteins hormones tend to difficulty passing the cell membrane) [they have to fit a cellular recepter before they can affect the cell]
What are the 4 protein phases? Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary
What is Globular protein structure? something that look like a sphere
What phase are amino acids bonded together in? Primary
What bond is used to hold amino acids together? A peptide bond
What are nucleic acids? Biomolecules that contain the blueprints for making proteins, they also transmit genetic to the next generation
What are Nucleic Acids make up of? Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen Nitrogen and Phosphorus
What are nucleotides? monomers
What are nucleic acids? Polymers
What is the D in DNA stand for? The 5-carbon sugar deoxyribose, is also used for passing down characteristics to offspring
What is the R in RNA stand for? Ribose
What does DNA do? Remove oxygen for sugar (1 less oxygen than Ribose) can not be passed down to offspring

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
