Carbs and Lipids

Questions + Answers

QuestionAnswer
This element can form 4 bonds and is the main element of organic compounds. Carbon
Why are lipids and efficient form of energy storage? (HINT: Think about the bonds for this one.) They are long chains of hydrogen and carbon
The characteristic that ALL lipids have in common is- Does not disolve in water. (I.E. Is not soluble in water)
Lipids are made of- C,H,O,
Lipids differ from most other larger biomolecules in that they- Are hydrophobic
Single parts/units of a biomolecule are called: Monomers
What elements make up carbohydrates? Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen
An example of an unsaturated fat would be? Vegetable Oil
The 3 types of carbohydrates are- Monosaccharide, disaccharide, polysaccharide
What is the name of the reaction that involves the removal of a single water molecule from between two monomers? Dehydration Synthesis
All carbohydrates names end with- -ose
What is an unsaturated fat? Contains one or more double or triple bonds, come from plants, have fewer hydrogen atoms, curves (diagram), 2 types: Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated
What is a saturated fat? Contains no double bonds, has the perfect amount hydrogen atoms, also in a straight line (diagram)
What is most important thing about lipids? They store energy. They also have waterproof barriers, are chemical messengers and are used for insulation.
The ratio of carbon to hydrogen is: 1:2
What are the most common functional groups that lipids are composed of? Glycerol (and alcohol with 3 oxygen groups) and Fatty Acids (long Hydrocarbon chains)
What are Hydrocarbon chains? Chains made of hydrogen and carbon linked together
What kind of molecules are lipids if they can't bond to water? Nonpolar
Are lipids mostly solid or mostly liquid at room temperature? They tend to mostly be solid (Ex. Animal fat, Lard and Butter)
What is the Valance of Carbon? Carbon has a valance of 4
Are unsaturated fats mostly solid or mostly liquid at room temperature? They tend to mostly be Liquids (Ex. Oils and Margarine)
Why is Carbon extremely veritable? It can bond with itself up to 3 times
What is a double bond? It is when you have a lone electron that bonds with an adjacent carbon
What is a Phospholipid? It is a major component of cell membranes; it contains a hydrophilic end and 2 hydrophobic tails.
What is a Triglyceride? It is a glycerol molecule (CH2) with 3 fatty acid chains (1 glycerol attached to 3 fatty acid chains)
What are steroids? They are lipids with 4 rings bonded together, They are vital as hormones (which send chemical signals which are used in the body
What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a key bonding agent which keep that nerve endings from breaking.
How do you identify something that is polyunsaturated? Look for more than 1 double bond
How do you identify something that is monounsaturated? Look for ONLY 1 double bond
Why does oil stain clothes? All the oil gets trapped between the fibers of the clothes
How can you figure out if something is a lipid or not? You can figure out if something is lipid or not with brown paper.
What are both Lipids and Carbohydrates classified as? Biomolecules
What are carbs used for? Carbs are used for energy and structural support
What happens if carbs are not used for energy? They are stored as fat which is glycogen(a Polysaccharide)
What does the root word sacchar mean? sugar
What is lactose? A disaccharide
What is the ratio of carbs? (Carbon:Hydrogen:Oxygen) 1:2:1 (Ex. C6 H12 O6)
What are monomers called? Monosaccharides
What are dimers called? Disaccharides
What are Polymers called? Polysaccharides
What do Carbohydrates occur in? Rings
What do plants create the most of? Carbohydrates
What is used as a common source for energy for most organisms? Glucose
What are other types of carbs in nature? Fructose (Fruit Sugar), Lactose(Milk Sugar), Sucrose(Table Sugar), Ribose/Deoxyribose (Important for DNA and RNA)
What do carbohydrates use to bond to each other? Dehydration Synthesis
What is a Glucosidic bond? What its called when 2 carbohydrates are joined to each other
What is the cellular form of glucose? Cellulose
Where is Glycogen stored? The liver
What are Starches? Long chains of carbs in plants
What do plants use for structural support? Cellulose (Polysaccharide)
What are unsaturated fats missing? A hydrogen ring
How many double bonds does a monounsaturated fat have? 1 Double bond
