| polyphony | two or more melodic lines of equal importance, played at the same time |
| modes | scales used in the Medieval and Renaissance periods |
| non-metric | music with no barlines or time signature |
| acapella | singing unaccompanied by instruments |
| parallel organum | two voices singing a 4th or 5th apart in parallel motion |
| principal | the voice that sings the original plainchant |
| organal | the second voice added to accompany plainchant singing |
| strophic form | a song structure that consists only of verses and no chorus; used in secular music |
| hurdy-gurdy | a chordophone with strings that vibrate by turning a wheel |
| chordophones | instruments that generate sound through the vibration of strings |
| aerophones | instruments that generate sound through the vibration of air |
| membranophones | instruments that generate sound through the vibration of a stretched skin |
| consort | different sizes of the same instrument |
| vielle | Medieval fiddle with 5 strings; chordophone |
| portative organ | a portable mini organ used in secular music; aerophone |

| improvisation | making up music on the spot based on the key and time signature of the piece |
| call-and-response | one person sings/plays a phrase and another person answers |
| 12 bar blues | chord progression based on chords I, IV and V |
| blues scale | a scale with only 7 notes used in blues music |
| chorus (in Jazz) | one cycle of the 12 bar blues chord progression |

| major tonality | music in a major key; happy |
| minor tonality | music in a minor key; sad |
| leitmotif | a small theme associated with a character, object or idea in a film |
| atmosphere | music in film that depicts how everyone in the scene feels |
| character emotion | music in film that depicts the emotions of one character |
| character identity | music in film that depicts whether a character is a hero or a villain |
| foreshadowing | music in film that creates suspense |
| dissonance | 2 or more notes played at the same time that clash and do not sound nice together |
| forte | Italian dynamics term for loud |
| fortissimo | Italian dynamics term for very loud |
