Photosynthesis

QuestionAnswer
What is photosynthesis? The process by which green plants convert sunlight energy into chemical energy.
What are the requirements fo photosynthesis? light (radiant energy), carbon dioxide, water, chlorophyll
Where does photosynthesis take place? In the green portions of plants.
Where does CO2 enter the leaf? Through the stomata
What does the photosynthesis reaction provide? Food, Oxygen and the energy present today in fossil fuels.
What comes in packets called photons, and travels in waves of different lengths? Radiant Energy
What type of relationship is there between the wave length and its energy content? Inverse Relationship
The shorter the wave length the more of what does it contain? energy
What are the longest waves? Radio
Which are the shortest waves? Gamma Rays
What are the wave lengths called that actually make it to earth's surface? Visible spectrum
A stack of thylakoids that contains the pigment chlorophyll, which absorbs the energy from the sun is called? Grana
What is the interior of the chloroplast, filled with an enzyme rich solution called? stroma
What are the three light dependent reactions that take place in the grana? 1. water molecules are split apart, producing hydrogen ions and electrons, and oxygen gas is released.2. The hydrogen is picked up by NADP, forming NADPH3. NADPH is carried out of the grana to the stroma
What are the two light dependent reactions that take place in the stroma? 1. CO2 from the air is combined with the NADPH, forming RuBP, a five-carbon sugar.2. The RuBP is converted through several steps, to 6-carbon sugars such as glucose.
