Biology Chapter 7A
Part 1 of Chapter 7 Vocab.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | Basic unit of all forms of life. |
| Cell Theory | Fundamental concept of biology that states… 1) All living things are composed of cells, 2) Cells are the basic units of structure, 3) New cells are produced from existing cells. |
| *Nucleus | In the center of an atom, a large membrane-enclosed structure that contains the cell’s genetic material in the form of DNA and controls many of the cell's activities. |
| Eukaryote | Organism whose cells contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. (More complex and tends to be larger than prokaryotic cells.) |
| Prokaryote | Unicellular (single-celled) organism that lacks a nucleus (free-floating DNA) and has no membrane-bound organelles. |
| Organelle | Specialized structure that performs important cellular functions within a cell. |
| Cytoplasm | Jelly-like substance that fills the cell and gives the cell shape. Eukaryotic cells; all cellular contents outside the nucleus. Prokaryotic cells; all of the cells’ contents. |
| *Nuclear Membrane (envelope) | A lipid bilayer (double layer) that encloses the cell's nucleus and acts as a barrier that separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm. (Outer covering of the nucleus.) |
| Chromatin | A complex of macromolecules composed of DNA, RNA, and protein, which is found inside the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. |
| Chromosome | Threadlike structure of DNA and protein that contains genetic information. (Eukaryotes; found in the nucleus. Prokaryotes; found in the cytoplasm) |
