Biology Chapter 7A

Part 1 of Chapter 7 Vocab.

TermDefinition
Cell Basic unit of all forms of life.
Cell Theory Fundamental concept of biology that states… 1) All living things are composed of cells, 2) Cells are the basic units of structure, 3) New cells are produced from existing cells.
*Nucleus In the center of an atom, a large membrane-enclosed structure that contains the cell’s genetic material in the form of DNA and controls many of the cell's activities.
Eukaryote Organism whose cells contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. (More complex and tends to be larger than prokaryotic cells.)
Prokaryote Unicellular (single-celled) organism that lacks a nucleus (free-floating DNA) and has no membrane-bound organelles.
Organelle Specialized structure that performs important cellular functions within a cell.
Cytoplasm Jelly-like substance that fills the cell and gives the cell shape. Eukaryotic cells; all cellular contents outside the nucleus. Prokaryotic cells; all of the cells’ contents.
*Nuclear Membrane (envelope) A lipid bilayer (double layer) that encloses the cell's nucleus and acts as a barrier that separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm. (Outer covering of the nucleus.)
Chromatin A complex of macromolecules composed of DNA, RNA, and protein, which is found inside the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
Chromosome Threadlike structure of DNA and protein that contains genetic information. (Eukaryotes; found in the nucleus. Prokaryotes; found in the cytoplasm)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
