APES Unit 2
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Species Richness | the number of different species found in an ecosystem |
| Eugenics | the practice of improving the (physical) quality of the human race |
| Joseph Mangle | experimented on incoming Holocaust survivors, especially twins |
| Species Diversity | number and variety of species |
| Ecosystem Diversity | variety of biomes |
| Genetic Diversity | variety of genes in a population |
| Coevolution | happens between predators and prey, when species engage in a back and forth "contest" to gain a temporary genetic advantage |
| Hybridization | new species can arise, occurs when two individuals crossbreed to produce offspring |
| Horizontal gene transfer | reproduction without sex |
| Species Evenness | the highest when all species in a sample have the same abundance |
| Anthropocene | our current time period, thought to start around the Industrial Revolution, popularized by Paul Cruzten |
| Supporting Services | natural services necessary for other services to function EX: photosynthesis allows plants to grow so others can eat the plants |
| Provisioning Services | natural services that typically are traded in markets or used in households EX: water, food, timber |
| Regulating Services | often taken for granted because they aren't seen EX: air quality, pollination, water flow |
| Intrinsic Value | the value that an entity has in itself, for what it is (This may not serve me, but it's important) |
| Instrumental Value | the value something has a means to a desired end (This will serve me) |
| Island Biogeography | the study of the ecological relationship and distribution of organisms on islands, and of these organisms' community structures |
| Population Density | the number of individuals in a given area |
| Environmental Resistance | factors that limit population growth |
| Rule of 70 | 70/(percentage growth rate)= x years until the population doubles |
| Resistance | a measurement of how much an ecosystem changes after a disruption (little change=high resistance) |
| Resilience | the measure of how quickly the ecosystem can bounce back grom the disturbance, ecosystem recovery |
| Periodic | occurring at repeated intervals EX: the tides |
| Episodic | occurring at occasionally and at irregular intervals EX: El Nino |
| Ecological Succession | gradual changes in species composition |
| Inertia | ability of a living system to survive moderate disturbances |
| Serotiny | the dependency on heat during the seed production cycle |
| Swidden | slash and burn agriculture |
| Pyriscene | an organism's adaptation to a fire-prone environment |
| Crown Fires | very hot, burns whole trees, kills wildlife, and increase soil erosion |
| Ecological Tipping Point | when forests cannot naturally grow back |
