| life process | things an organism must do to stay alive |
| Ingestion | when animals ‘take in’ (eat) food |
| Digestion | when food is changed to a form an organism can use |
| Cellular Respiration | process of changing energy from food into energy that an organism can use |
| Transport | the moving of nutrients and waste products through an organism |
| Excretion | getting rid of waste |
| Cell | the smallest unit of life |
| homeostasis | the ability to maintain a stable environment inside the body |
| stimulus or stimuli | change in the environment |
| response | a reaction to a change in the environment |
| organism | a living thing; can be a plant, animal, fungus, or single-celled |
| biotic | currently living or used to be living |
| abiotic | not living and never lived |
| autotroph | an organism that makes its own food (plants are autotrophic) |
| heterotroph | an organism that needs to get its food from eating other organisms (animals and fungi are heterotrophic) |
| adapt | the act of changing to live in an environment |
