Cell Organelles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleolus | contains chromatin inside the nucleus in the nucleolus Where ribosomes are made. Ribosomes produce proteins for the cell. |
| Nucleus | Directs all cell activities. RNA and DNA live here |
| Ribosome | Produce proteins. |
| Vesicle | Store foods, water, waste, protiens and other materials. Can release into the outside environment |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Passageways carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to the other. |
| Golgi Body | Receive materials from the ER and send them throughout the cell. Also release materials outside of the cell. |
| cell membrane | protects the inside of the cell. Controls what enters and leaves the cell. |
| Smooth ER | makes and stores fats |
| Mitochondria | Convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out all of its functions. |
| central vacuole | Stores water, only in plant cells |
| Cytoplasm | jelly-like material all organelles are suspended in. Allows proteins and other materials to be transported throughout the cell. |
| Lysosome | Contain special chemicals that break down food particles and worn out cell parts |
| Centriole | Create spindle fibers that help pull the cell a part during cell division. |
| Chloroplast | Only in plant cells, helps with photosynthesis |
| Vacuoles | Smaller, found throughout animal cells. Store and Expel water |
| Cell Wall | Surrounds the cell in plant cells |
| Cytoskeleton | Gives animal cells shape and structure |
| Peroxisomes | Maintains metabolism |
| Flagella | a slender threadlike structure, especially a microscopic appendage that enables many protozoa, bacteria, spermatozoa, etc. to swim |
| Cilia | hair-like structure on the cell, helps move the cell or transport fluids |
