Astronomers

QuestionAnswer
Ptolemy Ancient Greek astronomer who believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi Used algebra to determine the positions of the sun, moon, and five known planets at specific times of the day, month, and year.
Nicolaus Copernicus Developed a heliocentric, or sun-centered, model which relied on the sun being at the center and the planets arranged around the sun based on how quickly each planet orbits the sun.
Tycho Brahe Built huge instruments that allowed him to take extremely precise measurements of stars and planets. Recorded very precise observations of the planets and stars that helped future astronomers
Johannes Kepler Used Brahe's data to calculate the shapes of planetary orbits and that the sun is the center of the solar system. By suggesting that planets have elliptical, or oval-shaped, orbits rather than circular orbits
Galileo First person known to use a telescope to observe the stars and planets. Discovered: craters on the moon and four of Jupiter's moons. Tried for heresy
Isaac Newton Published a set of physical laws describing how things move when acted on by forces; developed a model of gravity that explained the motions of the planets and other bodies in the solar system.
Caroline Herschel Made a map of the Milky Way galaxy in the 1700's. Completed the cataloging of 2,500 nebulae and many star clusters.
Edwin Hubble Used the largest telescope in the world to determine "nebulae" were actually galaxies beyond the Milky Way.
Carl Sagan Made important scientific studies in the fields of planetary science, he also managed to popularize astronomy more than any other individual.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
