Properties of Water
6.6 Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cohesion | Water molecules are attracted to water molecules |
| Adhesion | Water molecules are attracted to other substances |
| Capillary Action | Water molecules move through materials that have spaces in them. |
| Surface Tension | Tightness across the surface of water that is caused by water's polar molecules |
| Specific Heat | The amount of heat needed to increase the temperature by one degree of Celsius. |
| Solvent | Any substances that dissolves another substance |
| Polar Molecule | One end of the molecule is slightly positive, while the other end is slightly negative |
| Evaporation | Water molecules heat up and change from a liquid to a gas. |
| Condensation | The process by which a gas changes to a liquid |
| Six Properties of Water | cohesion, adhesion, capillary action, surface tension, universal solvent, and specific heat. |
| Zero Degrees Celsius | liquid water freezes |
| Water boils | One hundred degrees Celsius |
| Deposition | When sediments stop moving |
