HEART, CARDIAC CYCLE, BLOOD VESSELS

QuestionAnswer
What is the cardiovascular system? The cardiovascular system also called the circulatory system, contains the heart and the blood vessels. It moves blood throughout the body. This system helps tissue get enough oxygen and nutrients, and it helps them get rid of waste products.
What is oxygen poor blood or blue blood? Oxygen poor blood is blood that is used up. As blood travels through the body and oxygen is used up the blood becomes 'oxygen poor.' Oxygen poor blood returns from the body to the heart through the superior vena cava (SVC) and inferior vena cava (IVC). T
What is oxygen rich blood? Oxygen rich blood occurs when the blood gets oxygen in the lungs.
Systole Systole is when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood from the chambers into the arteries. (contraction of the muscles)
Diastole When the heart muscle relaxes and allows the chambers to fill with blood. (Relaxation of cardiac muscles) Myocardium
Pulmonary Arteries Carries blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs
There are 4 valves in the heart Tricuspid, Pulmonary artery, Mitral or Bicuspid, aortic valve
Tricuspid Valve Is between the heart's two chambers. It consist of three thin flaps of tissue called cusps or leaflets. The flaps open to let blood flow from the upper right chamber (right atrium) to the lower right chamber (right Ventricle)
Pulmonary Valve It's between the lower right chamber (right ventricle) and the artery that delivers blood to the lungs ( pulmonary artery)
Mitral or Bicuspid Valve The valve between the atrium and the left ventricle of the heart, consisting of two tapered cusps
Aortic Valve It connects the left side of your heart with your aorta. Your aorta is the large artery that carries oxygen rich blood to your body. The aortic valve controls blood flow to your aorta and keeps blood moving in one direction
3 types of blood vessels Artery- carries blood away form the heart Capillary- Microscopic vessels Vein- carries blood to the heart
Endothelium is a type of tissue inside all blood vessels
Endocardium the inner most layer covering the inside of the heart
Capillaries allow for the exchange of nutrients, oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood and tissues
Femoral the largest artery in the body found in the thigh
Arterioles small arteries that branches out into capillaries (Artery--Arterioles--Capillaries
Pulmonary circulation Are blood vessels in the lungs. These vessels carry blood to and from the lungs.
Systemic Circulation Carry blood to and from the entire body
"Lub Dub" Sound of the heart as the valve open and close
Endothelium found inside all vessels
Interatrial Septum & Interventricular Septum keeps the blood on left and right sides from mixing
Chordae Tendineae Strong thin tissues that holds the valve in place during the forceful contractions of the ventricle
