Definitions for mineral vocab

QuestionAnswer
What Is a mineral? A naturally occurring, inorganic solid with definite chemical with difinite chemical composition and an orderly arrangement of atoms.
What Is a crystal? A solid in which the atoms are arranged in orderly, repeating patterns.
What is magma? A hot melted rock material.
What is a silicate? It is a mineral that contain silicon and oxygen and usually one or more other elements.
What is hardness? A measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched.
What is luster? The way a mineral reflects light.
What is streak? The color of a mineral when it is in powdered form.
What is cleavage? A mineral that breaks along smooth, flat surfaces.
What is fracture? A mineral that breaks with uneven, rough, or jaggad surfaces.
What is a gem? A mineral or gemstone that is highly prized because it is rare.
What is an ore? A mineral or rock that contains a useful substance that can be mined at a profit.
