Term | Definition |

Author's Purpose | the reason that an author writes about a particular topic (to persuade, to inform, to entertain, to explain, to analyze) . The reason an author includes particular details, features, or devices in a work. |
Compound Sentence | A sentence composed of at least two independent clauses linked with a conjunction or semicolon. |
Editing | A stage in the writing process when a written text is prepared for an audience by attending to and correcting mechanics, grammar, and spelling. |
Figurative Language | Language not intended to be taken literally but layered with meaning through the use of imagery, metaphors, and other literary devices. |
Idiom | An expression that has a different meaning from the literal meaning of its individual words. |
Imagery | The use of language to create mental images and sensory impressions. Imagery can be used for emotional effect and to intensify the impact of the reader. |
Inquiry | An act of searching for information or knowledge about a particular subject or topic. |
Mental Image | Visualizing physical details from a text such as actions, charachters, scenes, events, and setting. |
Metaphor | A subtle comparison in which the author describes a person or thing using words that are not meant to be taken literally. |
Prefix | One or more letters placed before a root or base word that changes the meaning of the word. |
Revising | A stage in the writng process when a text is examined/ changes are maded to improve focus, content, organization, sentences structure, and word choice in order to clarify the intended message, create flow, and more successfully engage the audience. |
Root | The basic form of a word without any affixes. |
Simile | A comparison of two things that are essentially different, usually using the words like or as. |
Sound Device | A device used by authors to create meaning through sound and help readers develop visual images. |
Suffix | One or more letters placed after a root or base word that changes the meaning of a word. |
Text Evidence | Paraphrased or directly quoted detail (s) from a text that supports the reader's claim, thought, inference, or analysis about the text. |
