Scientific Method Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Research using outside sources to learn new information about a given topic
Procedure the steps that it takes to solve the given problem/ guiding question
Title of a Lab brief description of what you did in the experiment
Interpretation why your conclusion is important; how your data/evidence supports your claim
Qualitative Observation quality; based on your 5 senses
Quantitative Observation quantity; how much/ how many; measured using tools
Inference using background knowledge to make a guess about something you have observed "My dog is fat (observation), because she eats candy (background knowledge- candy makes you fat)
Hypothesis using research and background knowledge to make a guess about something that has NOT happened yet; "if, then, because" "if I feed my dog candy, then she will become fat, because candy has sugar that makes you fat"
Independent Variable what "i" change; variable that doesn't depend on anything (ex. different sized pots)
Dependent Variable "depends" on independent variable; variable that changes based on the changes the experimenter makes; change that is measured using tools (ex. height of plants)
Controls variables that are constant throughout the entire experiment (ex. amount of water, sunlight, type of soil)
Evidence the DATA that is used to prove your claim
Claim answer to the guiding question that summarizes your data; past tense of hypothesis "i did this, and this happened"
Experimental Group the group in an experiment that receives the treatment
Control Group the group in an experiment that doesn't receive the treatment
