astronomy sun and moon phases

TermDefinition
lunar highlands light colored and covered with craters, formed during the period of heavy bombardment
maria dark colored, flat plains, low elevation, generate heat and caused lava on the moon ,formed after the highlands
impact craters large depressions caused by objects hitting the surface
rays bright streaks of material coming out of impact craters
photosphere visible layer of the sun, gives off the light we see from the sun
chromosphere oustide the photosphere, helps give the sun its color
corona nicknamed the crown, outermost layer, no defined end to this layer, this is considered the suns rays
solar wind a stream of high speed charged particles called ions, flow outward from the corona, the earths magnetic field protects us from this
sun spots temporary dark cool spots that appear on earth, they create disturbances on earth, the ozone layer protects us from these
prominences huge arching columns of gas, they look like giant loops of gas coming of the sun, they can blast into pace at 1000 km/sec
solar flares eruptions of gases from the sun, they appear as bright areas on the surface, they can release x-rays that disrupt the earth, our magnetosphere protects us from these.
radio signals on earth and cause the northern/southern lights they appear as auroas
continuous spectra rainbow colored spectra , no breaks in it, produced by a growing solid or liquid
emission spectra a dark background with bright rainbow colored lines through it, produced by gases
absorption spectra rainbow colored background with dark lines, produced when a cool gas surrounds the source of a continuous spectrum
spring tides occur at new moon and full moon phases, when the earth, moon, and sun are in alignment, the gravitational pull of the sun and moon add together
neap tides occur at first and third quarter moon phases, when the suns gravitational pull is opposing the moons.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
