BIO Exam #2

QuestionAnswer
The movement of carbon atoms between organic and inorganic molecules in the environment. Carbon Cycle
Makes up 78% of the atmosphere Nitrogen
A natural process in which years of high productivity can change the structure and function of an aquatic system. Eutrophication
Deal with nitrogen cycle and hypoxia. Low dissolved oxygen and usually affects bottom waters The Dead Zone.
Dead fish and collapse of shrinking industry Symptoms of The Dead Zone
Each element consists of a unique atom, A atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains the properties of an element. Atomic structure.
Has no electrical charge, but has mass and number can change Neutrons
has a positive charge and has mass and determines identity of elements Protons
Has a negative charge with negligible mass and number can change Electron
Number of protons Atomic number
Number of protons and neutrons mass number
How do shell diagrams work? The fist shell has 2 electrons while each additional shell can carry 8 electrons
Cation is what? Cation has a positive charge
Anion is what? Anion has a negative charge
What are found in the orbitals around the nucleus of an atom? Electron
What's are electrons found in the outermost shell called? Valence electrons
Do valence electrons prefer to be in a full shell or no? Yes
How does electronegativity increase in an ionic bond? Electronegativity increases > and ^
How does an ionic bond work? Atoms will sometimes strip electrons from their bonding partner.
Example of ionic bond? in sodium chloride (salt) the sodium gives one of its valence electron to the chloride. This makes both outer shells full.
What is a charged atom or molecule called? An Ion
What is type of attraction is shown in an ionic bond? Attraction of oppositely charged ions.
What its a covalent bond? The sharing go a pair of valence electrons by two atoms. This can be between atoms of the same or different electrons.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
