SCIENCE UNIT 9 CHAPT. 2 - VOCABULARY QUIZ #3

TermDefinition
Gills fish breathe through gills as they swim through the water.
Digestive System the system that breaks down food so cells can use the nutrients.
Esophagus the tube that connects your throat with the stomach. It has rings of muscle that push the food down; one of the only times gravity isn’t involved with downward movement.
Stomach a muscular bag where the food mixes with enzymes & acids to further break down the food.
Small Intestine narrow, but long coiled tube where most digestion takes place, and absorbs nutrients for your cells.
Large Intestine wider, but shorter coiled tube that soaks up water, minerals and wastes. Solid wastes pass out of your body.
Liver food doesn’t pass through the liver, but it makes enzymes, bile, to help with digestion of fats.
Gallbladder food doesn’t pass through the gallbladder, but it stores the bile that the liver makes and secretes it when food passes through the small intestine.
Pancreas food doesn’t pass through, but the pancreas makes chemicals that digest proteins.
Excretory System waste removal (solid, liquid) and keeps the water & salt level in balance.
Urinary System part of the excretory system that removes liquid wastes.
Kidneys main organs of the urinary system; filter waste from the blood, keep water, salt, and calcium in balance.
Ureters 2 thin tubes from the kidneys to the bladder.
Bladder stores the urine and then releases it from the body.
Urethra tube that takes the urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
Reproductive System makes cells to produce new organisms, and replicate cells.
Testes special reproductive cells in males.
Ovaries special reproductive cells in females.
