Need to Know Pt.1

QuestionAnswer
Classify levels of macromolecules from largest to smallest Macromolecule, polymer, monomer
Out of the 4 macromolecules, how many are polymers? Which one is not? 3 Lipids
What are the 4 classes of organic molecules? Proteins, Lipids, Carbohydrates, Nucleic Acids
Enzymes speed up the chemical reactions that effect... polymers
During a dehydration reaction... As synthesized polymer removes a H2O molecule and forms a new bond.
Hydrolysis can be considered the reverse of...? A dehydration reaction
Carbs give you energy, meaning that... they serve as fuel and building material for the body.
What is the monomer of carbohydrates? Monosaccharide
What is the polymer of carbohydrates? Polysaccharide
What is the most common form of sugar? C6H12O6 (glucose)
In what two ways are sugars classified? 1) Location of carbonyl group( aldose vs ketose) 2) # of carbons in skeleton
What do sugars form in aqueous solutions? Rings
What is the architecture and function of a polysaccharide determined by? A sugar’s monomers and positions of glycosidic linkages
Simplest form of starch Amylose
Where is glycogen stored? liver and muscle cells
Does hydrolysis release glucose in a cycle or by demand? By demand
Although cellulose is a polymer of glucose, how does it differ from starch It has a different glycosidic linkage.
If enzymes that digest starch by hydrolyzing alpha links, can they hydrolyze beta links in cellulose? No
Is cellulose in human food soluble or insoluble? It is insoluble.
Since they are insoluble, what is used to digest cellulose? Enzymes
What link makes it difficult to digest cellulose? alpha or beta? beta

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
