Chapter 1

Cell Organelles

DefinitionTerm
A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell; it does the work of cells Organelles
A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell. cell membrane
A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended Cytoplasm
Cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates Vacuoles
small membrane sacs that specialize in moving products into, out of, and within a cell Vesicles
A large vacuole that rests at the center of most plant cells and is filled with a solution that contains a high concentration of solutes. central vacuole
An organelle containing digestive enzymes; digest food to make energy lysosomes
Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of ATP (energy) production Mitochondria
sugar + oxygen ATP
organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy; energy + sugar from sunlight Chloroplast
sunlight + carbon dioxide = ATP & sugar photosynthesis
A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane in a plant cell and provides support to the cell cell wall
Control center of the cell. Contains DNA. Nucleus
site of protein synthesis Ribosomes
-Works on proteins -Helps complete the proteins after ribosome builds them -Makes membranes Endoplasmic Reticulum
Ribosomes attached Works on proteins Rough ER
ER that has no ribosomes; makes membranes Smooth ER
Composition of the cell wall that the animal cell can't have; A substance (made of sugars) that is common in the cell walls of many organisms Cellulose

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
