rupture | the process of breaking open or bursting; a tear in an organ or tissue |
sagittal | a vertical plane through the longitudinal axis of the trunk dividing the body into right and left portions |
sedation | reduction of anxiety, stress, irritability, or excitement by administration of a sedative agent or drug |
skull | the bony or cartilaginous framework of the head, made up of the bones of the braincase and face;cranium |
spine | the series of vertebrae forming the axis of the skeleton and protecting the spinal cord |
subcostal | beneath the ribs |
susceptible | having little resistance to disease |
systemic | of, relating to, or affecting the entire body or an entire organism |
tetanus | an acute, often fatal disease that is characterized by spasmodic contraction of voluntary muscles, especially one occurring in the neck and jaw, caused by the neurotoxin of C. tetani, which infects the body through a deep wound. Also called lockjaw |
tissue | a group or collection of similar cells and their intercellular substances which act together in the performance of a particular function. There are four basic types of tissue: muscle, nerve, epithelial and connective. |
tongue | a mobile mass of muscular tissue that is covered with mucous membrane, occupies much of the cavity of the mouth, forms part of its floor, bears the organ of taste, and assists in chewing, swallowing and speech |
tonsil | a prominent oval mass of lymphoid tissue on each side of the throat |
toxic | capable of causing injury or death, especially by chemical means; poisonous |
trachea | the tube in vertebrate animals that leads from the larynx to the bronchial tubes and carries air to the lungs. In mammals the trachea is strengthened by rings of cartilage. Also called windpipe. |
transplant | to transfer a tissue or an organ from one body or body part to another |
triceps | a muscle having three heads or points of origin, esp. the muscle on the back of the arm, the action of which straightens the elbow |
ulcer | an open sore or lesion of the skin or mucous membrane of the body, with loss of substance, sometimes accompanied by formation of pus |
ventricle | either or two lower chambers of the heart which when filled with blood contract to propel it into the arteries |
vertebral column | the series of articulated vertebrae, separated by intervertebral disks and held together by muscles and tendons, that extends from the cranium to the coccyx or the end of the tail, encasing the spinal cord and forming the supporting axis of the body. |
vein | any of the branching blood vessels carrying blood toward the heart. All veins except the pulmonary veing carry dark unaerated blood. |
